ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the byelaws related to prevention of waste, misuse and contamination of water from draw-off taps, baths, basins, sinks and other fittings. The requirements of byelaw 85(1)(b) would be accepted as being satisfied whenever any bath, wash basin, sink or bidet is provided with a waste body and waste plug which comply with British Standard 3380. This requirement is modified by byelaw 85(2) which exempts shower baths, any apparatus (e.g. a spray tap) delivering no more than 3.6 litres per minute, and any apparatus used for medical or veterinary purposes which is designed for use with an unplugged waste. According to byelaw 86, every washing trough which consists of two or more units shall be fitted with separate draw-off taps or similar apparatus for each such unit. Byelaw 88 limits the volumes of water used in a single cycle of operations of clothes and dishwashing machines and water using tumbler driers.
