ABSTRACT

Of course, it does not happen like this in all practice areas but in asking the seemingly innocent question ‘why do it that way?’ Maurice has uncovered the complex nature of the relationship between evidence and practice. Even in cases where the evidence is uncontroversial (such as in relation to the underarm lift) there is no guarantee that nurses will base their practice on that evidence. There are many possible reasons for this and some of these will be explored later in this chapter.
