ABSTRACT

Fire safety is concerned with the protection of the occupants, contents and structure of a building from the risks associated with fire. The subject is of vital importance and is so linked with the design and construction of buildings that it is essential to have an understanding of the factors which influence the nature and form of fire protection and of the principles which are the basis of the various regulations.1 It is for this reason that it is discussed in this chapter in relatively broad terms, involving as it does considerations of planning as well as of construction, rather than in terms merely of the constructional aspects of protection which, in fact, are conditioned by, and cannot be separated from, planning aspects.
