Parenting, children and recovery

In this chapter we look at the impact which the addicts' drug use had on their children and, in particular, at the way in which their growing awareness of that impact played an important part in their recovery. Although not all of the individuals interviewed in our research were parents, 30 of the 70 recovering addicts whom we interviewed spoke at length, and usually without prompting, about the way in which their drug use had affected their children and about how this realisation had influenced their decision to give up drugs. Before looking in detail at what our recovering addicts had to say about their children, we would like to discuss briefly why children appear to have played such a prominent part in the recovery of so many of them.
