Becoming and being addicted
Although the primary focus of this book is the process by which some addicts are able to come off illegal drugs, it is also important to appreciate the conditions and circumstances under which they became addicted in the first place. This is essential to an understanding of the place of drugs in these individuals' lives and of some of the significant issues they had to address in giving them up. Accordingly, in this chapter we begin by examining how and why the members of our sample first came to use illegal drugs. We then go on to explore the process by which they became addicts and to describe their experiences of living with and sustaining their addiction.
