ABSTRACT

This uncompleted fragment is drafted on p. 169 of Nbk 11. Drafts for SP ii 70–3 are written at the bottom of the page and on the following page 170, which also carries the six lines of the uncompleted O thou power, the swiftest (no. 294). SP was very probably composed in March 1820. The present draft has extensive resemblances to Liberty (no. 300), composed in the latter half of March 1820— that connection and the proximity of draft for SP argue for a date of composition in March as well. It is possible that the present alternating tetrameter and trimeter lines represent an abandoned attempt to celebrate the revolutionary upheaval and advent of Liberty in the poem of that title which develops these themes in longer lines and a more intricate stanza form.
