ABSTRACT

Supply of water in sufficient quantity and of appropriate quality is a growing concern for megacities. Factors such as population growth, changes in land use, deforestation, climate change and lack of sound planning combine in a complex, inter-related process to affect water supply and its management (Oswald, 2011). Several megacities in the developing world (e.g. São Paulo, Manila, Delhi and Cairo) face similar problems such as severe water scarcity, limitations in water supply and sewage systems, flooding and poor water management. The metropolitan area of the Valley of Mexico is an excellent case study of a megacity with such issues and challenges.
