ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we discuss the education and professional development of Japanese preschool teachers, focusing on the development of an inquiry and reflective stance and how that is supported in both preservice and professional education. We begin with a brief description of the preschool system in Japan and the requirements for and a description of teacher education. We then discuss how inquiry and reflection have been incorporated and are essential to teacher learning and development throughout the professional life of the teacher.
