ABSTRACT
Introduction In this chapter we will consider the use of juries in the civil and criminal justice system. The jury system is often referred to as a cornerstone of the English legal system. Its origins pre-date the Magna Carta of 1215 , in which the right to be tried by one’s peers was recognised. Lord Devlin described the jury system as ‘the lamp that shows freedom lives’.
