Unpacking the Standard-SMP 6: Attend to Precision Most teachers have experienced the frustration of asking students how they arrived at their answer only to hear, “I just knew it.” It may seem odd that students do not know how they solved a word problem even if their answer is correct, but more often than not, students simply cannot verbalize their solution process. In order to provide an explanation, a student must possess strong content knowledge, an understanding of the goal of the word problem and why the answer makes sense.
