ABSTRACT

Adolescence is the period of life between childhood and adulthood. It is during this period that the biological and maturational changes called puberty take place. These changes convert a sexually immature child into a person capable of reproduction. The teenage years are a long developmental period, a full decade, and because of the rapid physical and psychological changes that take place over this time there is a considerable difference between early and late adolescence. The forces behind adolescent development are undoubtedly the physical changes that transform a child into an adult. These changes impel social changes in the life of the adolescent and these in turn produce both cognitive and emotional effects. Though physical development is the driving force in adolescent development in general and also in adolescent emotional development, it is physical development on the base of what has gone before. This is particularly true of physical effects that influence social and thus emotional development.
