ABSTRACT

Sigmund Freud is the most recognised psychologist of all time. He produced a body of work covering a diverse range of topics from child and personality development, the meaning of dreams to the therapeutic treatments of mental disorders. Despite his emphasis on the importance of childhood experiences on adult development, Freud only documented one case study of a child. Because of this, the case study of Little Hans is of crucial importance in Freudian theory. Freud closely monitored and advised on the therapeutic process. This process was subsequently reported by Freud in 1909 in a paper entitled 'The Analysis of a Phobia in a Five Year Old Boy'. Freud's theory of sexuality had not been well received in many quarters and had variously been described as abominably immoral work and obscene. In addition, Freud set out to detail the development and resolution of a phobia as a form of neurotic disorder.
