ABSTRACT

While we may be tempted to think of a song in a musical as a snapshot of the character at a given time, it can be more useful to see that song as a motion picture. Rather than a static and unmoving two-dimensional image of a character having just one feeling for three or four minutes, a song in a musical is a dynamically changing experience a character goes through and we go through with him. We call this changing experience the journey of the song.
