ABSTRACT

Ghanaians have been exposed to the English language for over five hundred years. British traders first came to Ghana in the late 15th century. By the middle of the 16th century, they had established a strong trade in gold, ivory, spices and slaves. The first British missionaries arrived in the middle of the 18th century and with missionaries came a more formal push towards teaching Ghanaians English. It was not until the late 1950s that Ghanaians were finally free of British rule.
