ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some sample sentences for the vowels and diphthongs of Detailed American English (DAE). This model is the base accent used in exploring the sound changes for the African accents in this workbook. The chapter contain some types of vowles such as: Front Vowels, Middle Vowels, Back Vowels, Diphthongs, Diphthongs of R and Triphthongs of R. Front Vowels: Vowels that are pronounced with the front section of the tongue arching or cupping toward the front of the hard palate. Middle Vowels: Vowels made by arching or cupping the middle section of the tongue toward the middle of the hard palate. Back Vowels: Vowels made by arching or cupping the back section of the tongue toward the back of the hard palate. Diphthongs: When two vowels are combined in one syllable. Diphthongs of R: A diphthong in which the second vowel is rhotic. Triphthongs of R: A combination of three vowel sounds, in which the third vowel is rhotic.
