ABSTRACT
Although essay writing remains one of the most popular forms of HE assessment, the value of using different assessment processes to provide a variety of experiences and allow students to develop in different ways is also very strong. In this chapter some of these alternatives will be explored and the main characteristics described. These include:
Portfolios (including graduate skills and action planning)
Work-based assignments and tasks
Oral presentations
Displays and poster presentations
Dissertations and longer assignments
Timed essay papers.
