ABSTRACT

If you are like many people who live in industrialized, wealthy parts of the world, you probably began your day by turning on your computer, tablet, or smart-phone and checking your email and your social networking sites. You may have responded to a text or “poke” from a relative living in a distant city or checked out some pictures that a friend studying abroad shared through Instagram. Later that evening, you may have submitted a class assignment on Blackboard, ordered food from the Thai restaurant down the block, and watched some videos of your favorite band performing somewhere on the other side of the world on YouTube. Before going to bed, you might have Skyped your girlfriend who lives in a nearby city. At some point during the day, you might have waited in frustration on the phone for a technical support person in India or Ireland to help you with a computer or smartphone issue.
