ABSTRACT

This chapter tries to assess the Arabs’ (in particular the Palestinians’) affinities to the Axis Powers, and to ascertain to what extent the British were justified in their fears that the Arabs would defect to the Axis in wartime. It will deal with the Mufti of Jerusalem’s approaches to Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany during the 1930s; the next chapter will deal with his collaboration with the Nazis during his wartime stay in Berlin. I will attempt first to answer the question: What verdict has history

returned on the Mufti’s collaboration with the Nazis and the SS?
