ABSTRACT

Both bloggers and traditional journalists have debated ever since whether or when and under what circumstances blogging can be considered journalism. Digital media have profoundly reordered the media landscape, and blogs and blogging have been at the center of that reordering. The blogosphere is a key piece of digital real estate, and blogs offer a longer form for writing than most social media. Blogging should be thought of, therefore, in a larger digital media context, one that includes and incorporates social media and social networks. The two most popularly used blog formats, Wordpress and Blogger.com offer slightly different blends of strengths and weaknesses. To the extent that a blog lacks original reporting, it should not be considered as doing the primary enterprise of journalism. Lott's capitulation or, more accurately, Marshall's attention to an overlooked political story proved a watershed moment for blogs, which were still considered by many at the time to be a minor league publishing option.
