ABSTRACT

Much of our knowledge of reading group discourse comes from the analysis of groups who meet face-to-face, such as those discussed in previous chapters. Online discourse remains relatively underexplored. Rehberg Sedo (2011b: 102) comments that ‘[s]cholarship in virtual book reception and collective reading practices is a small field that covers a narrow range of reading communities.’ However, significant numbers of readers interact online, exploiting the resources of different platforms to share their reading of literary texts. Online reading groups differ in several respects from groups who meet face-to-face and so provide fertile ground for the further exploration of popular reading practices. This is the subject of the following sections.
