Utopian Bodies: Some Kind of Blackness

In March 2015, in a documentary entitled Things We Won’t Say about Race That Are True, Trevor Phillips, the former head of the Commission for Racial Equality, made a dramatic statement: that his efforts under the Blair government to stamp out racism by discouraging the expression of racist sentiment had been a mistake. These comments were quickly picked up by the mainstream press, even before the documentary’s release, with the tabloid newspaper The Daily Mail headlining the story ‘We were wrong to try to ban racism out of existence, says former equality chief’ (Rahman 2015).
