ABSTRACT
The purpose of vocabulary instruction is not for students to acquire new words for a few days. We want as many targeted words as possible to become a permanent part of their vocabulary. In other words, we are not looking to rent space in our students’ brains for storage; we want to purchase it. We need to structure our direct vocabulary instruction so that the targeted words have the best possible chance of being permanently housed in our students’ brains.
