ABSTRACT
This poem provides an opportunity to discuss with students the fact that children are often torn between wanting to be independent and needing to be dependent. For instance, children often want to make their own decisions and to be left alone by adults. That is, until it's suppertime or until they need a ride somewhere or they need spending money, etc. This is a natural part of growing up.
