ABSTRACT

The child in this poem is learning one of life's tough lessons. Lies tend to grow, and they always come back full circle to haunt us. Not only do they hurt us, but they also have the potential to hurt others. Have the students discuss lies—what they are, what might tempt people to tell them, what some of their possible consequences may be, etc. The issue of "trust" usually surfaces here. Regardless of what surfaces, however, this poem always makes for an interesting discussion with students!
