ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a brief history of the social change as a way to identify some of the themes that link Western values to leadership. In particular, the people link Western leadership to five major historical periods, Ancient Greece; Rome; the Renaissance in Europe; the Enlightenment; and the Industrial Revolution in Europe and North America. It also presents a synopsis of The Prince and an analysis of the case study Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince and its connection to a Western perspective on leadership. Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince is often highlighted as a source of great leadership insight even today. However, its cultural context tends to be overlooked. The chapter examines the cultural context that produced The Prince as a great Western source of insight about leadership and presents a synopsis of The Prince and an analysis of the case study and its connection to a Western perspective on leadership.
