ABSTRACT

For Native Americans who served in the Vietnam conflict, the act of remembering manifests itself on two levels. The conflict began in November 1955 and ended in April 1975. There was never an open declaration of war by the USA. The Black-feet Vietnam veterans stated this clearly as, for those who were drafted, it added to their sense of injustice about fighting a war that was not a war, and that therefore contravened some terms of the tribe’s treaties with the US government. 1 Yet Vietnam was a war zone and a significant component of the Cold War (1947–1991) as well.
