ABSTRACT

This chapter will cover the processes of recruiting and selecting paid staff and volunteers, which are often fraught with difficulty. Some events are so popular that everyone wants to work there, the London Olympic Games attracting over 240,000 applications. It is an enormous processing task for an organization looking for 70,000 volunteers. And of these, many thousands of people want to be on the field of play during an opening ceremony. For one such event there was one individual who called the organizing committee every day for over 1,000 days to speak to anyone who would listen to him about his desire to be in this opening ceremony! For other event organizations it is quite the opposite: it is a real struggle to attract enough volunteers to sustain the event, particularly if it is a fundraiser.
