ABSTRACT

The Community Learning Center is a genuine learning community. Four basic principles govern the Center and its classrooms. First, learning extends beyond the classroom to include all the resources of the community. Second, teachers are facilitators of learning rather than dispensers of knowledge. Third, students are expected to be active learners, taking part in the work of developing a context for their own learning. Fourth, every student has the support of a mentor from the community who takes an active interest in the student’s intellectual and social development.
