ABSTRACT

Michael Lehman has been teaching mathematics at Holt High School for 20 years. Some years ago he became dissatisfied with his standard paper-andpencil approach to assessing students. He wanted students to do more than simply show how well they had memorized mathematical concepts-he wanted them to apply these concepts to a wide range of situations. However, °I was not sure what this type of student understanding looked like. I did not know if I could recognize it if I saw it, much less devise an assessment to measure it."
