ABSTRACT

At the beginning of the school year, I give the students a variety of assessments to help me understand them in a holistic manner. For example, see Figure 5.1. I create a math profile for each of my students. My goal is to understand them as mathematical thinkers and to get a good idea of how proficient they are. So the series of assessments that I give them checks the five elements of mathematical proficiency: conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, strategic competence, adaptive reasoning, and mathematical disposition (see Figure 5.2).
