Meticulous Reading

The standards require progressive levels of reading comprehension in a vari-ety of texts. As they advance through K-12 education, students are expect-ed to deepen their comprehension and handle longer and more complex text in a variety of genres, adapting their reading pace to suit specifi c purposes. For the classroom teacher, this means that students need to be reading more, reading progressively complex text, and knowing how and when to speed up, slow down, reread, get the gist, read between the lines, take notes, take a break, and make whatever mental and environmental adjustments they need to make to facilitate comprehension.
