The purpose of education is a topic that has been debated and written about for thousands of years, and finding a consensus definition is still impossible. My belief is that the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. summarize the purpose of education best: “Education must enable a man (or woman) to become more efficient, to achieve with increasing facility the legitimate goals of his life.” This definition is implied in the mission statements of schools throughout the country, as is evidenced below:

The New Paltz Central School District exists for the children of the community. The focus of its programs and activities is the commitment to measured excellence and continuous growth and development for all.
