My work in inner-city schools, urban schools, and rural schools has made abundantly clear to me the role and responsibility that the school should play in supporting the community. Many educators speak of how their schools could improve if they received support from the outside when their paradigm should be exactly the opposite. If schools wait to improve practice until full community support exists, schools will be sitting stagnant for an awfully long time. School and community relationships need to change now and it is the principal’s responsibility to initiate such change.
