ABSTRACT

This chapter provides model lesson plans for teaching the standards in reading, writing, speaking/listening, and language. Over the course of four class periods, students read or listen to the four parts of a story. It examines the story's pacing and analyzes the effects of literary techniques on themselves as readers. Full-class discussions include text-based questions that require students to analyze and reread portions of the text to construct meaning and draw conclusions. Some parts of the lesson function equally well as homework assignments. The lesson is geared to grades 9-10 but can be adapted to teaching Reading standards 1, 3, and 5 in grades 11-12. The chapter focuses on how the literary techniques contribute to overall meaning and aesthetic impact. In grades 9-10, Standard 5 asks students to analyze how an author's structural choices create mystery, tension, or other effects, whereas in grades 11-12, Standard 5 focuses on how an author's structural choices contribute to overall meaning and aesthetic impact.
