Lesson Plan 28: Let’s Figure Out Figurative Language
Extend the Lesson § Briefly review similes and metaphors as forms of figurative language. Ask students to
read the excerpt and underline each example of a simile or metaphor. (Three similes are in the last paragraph of the excerpt: “plough the fields like the ox,” etc. A metaphor is in paragraph seven of the excerpt: “He is a perfect monster.”). Have students use the excerpt from “The Remarkable Rocket” to complete the Simile and Metaphor Activity Sheet, either independently or in pairs. Ask students to share their notes and ideas in a full-class discussion.
