ABSTRACT

Learning takes place neither in isolation, nor only at school. Multiple measures must be considered and used in an ongoing fashion to understand the multifaceted world of learning from the perspective of everyone involved. The major job of every school district is student learning. Staff must think through the factors that impact student learning to determine other data requirements. Different levels of analysis reveal answers to questions at varying depths of understanding. Demographic data provide descriptive information about the district community, such as enrollment, attendance, grade level, ethnicity, gender, and native language. Perceptions data help people understand what students, parents, staff, and others think about the learning environment. Student Learning describes the outcomes of people's educational system in terms of standardized test results, grade point averages, standards assessments, and authentic assessments. School Processes define what people are doing to help students learn: how people group, teach, and assess students.
