ABSTRACT
Many of today’s most controversial and widely debated educational questions reflect, at their root, a basic lack of agreement about the underlying role and purpose of school. We hope this book demonstrates how mission statements can provide schools with an important opportunity to both define and communicate their fundamental purpose and role. The variety of school mission statements presented in this book highlight the broad range of goals that US schools pursue.
