One way to visualize the critical components influencing the relationship that an instructional leader has with faculty and staff members is with a set of gears. When all is well, the gear system directs energy to get the work done, but there are times when the gears grind under stress and strain. To describe critical attributes of relationships, we used gears because of their oddly appropriate technical names and also because for a gear to work each component must touch the next. Leaders touch real people in order to realize real goals (see Figure 1-1, next page).
