ABSTRACT
In the narrative prompt, the student is asked to write a story. In some state tests, the story speculates on a given picture or scenario; in other state tests, the story recounts a personal experience. When we write in narrative mode, we use description as a strong supportive strategy. So the instructional implications of the narrative prompt are that we must teach students both to understand and replicate story structure, and to enliven their stories with description.
