ABSTRACT

Preparing a revised job description can be a good opportunity to engage central office in a thoughtful review of the literature and a team approach to revising the expectations of the principalship. While the standards represent a significant improvement over existing expectations found on principal job descriptions, they represent a more gradual shift that would be better suited for schools not ready for dramatic changes in leadership. Working together to achieve better results will be a cultural change for many schools. Before doing this it is important to have conversations with teachers that underscore the need for improved teaching and learning and leadership’s role in supporting these endeavors. The support staff can be of great assistance in facilitating the changes that the principal is about to make. One of the greatest concerns of the secretary will be how to find the principal in the event of an emergency and when to interrupt meetings and classroom visitations.
