ABSTRACT

Have you ever heard a school executive say, “I don’t have to work that hard. The principalship is a pretty easy job.” In fact, you frequently hear the contrary: a litany of being overworked with a constant bombardment of innumerable daily actions and tasks. School executives never have enough time in the day. Many principals report that they get over 100 daily e-mails. School executives must juggle e-mails with voice mail, school meetings, central office meetings, and the informal “Hey, Boss-you got a minute?” conversations that can take 30 minutes. Where will you find time to do everything that needs to get done? You begin processing e-mails but you get sidetracked. A student comes in needing counseling. A teacher wants to get your opinion on a letter she is preparing to send out. All of these items by themselves are important, yet you feel that you never get anything done.
