ABSTRACT

In traditional grading, a final grade is all that enters the grade book. In a Writing Cycle, scores of three first drafts, a revision task, a proofreading task and a final evaluation appear as formative assessment. A Final Evaluation Rubric simply brings all of the fruitful work of the Writing Cycle to a close. It returns students to the big picture of the writing process the standard of a writing genre. Effective teachers of the writing process allow students to self-assess their performance and evaluate their progress at specific times throughout the process. Teachers respond to a student's self-assessment with intention and care, inspiring a conversation of formative assessment in points. A sense of joy fills teachers as they conduct their orchestra of student writers. They direct them in rehearsals of the writing process, following the musical score of the Writing Cycle through one genre and then the next.
