ABSTRACT

Vocabulary Acquisition and Use. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade-appropriate reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies. Teachers circle a number between 1 and 4 on the rubric to give students the clear message that they need to revise. All first drafts need to go through one or more revision strategies. Concrete revision strategies that lead to authentic revision prompt students to make choices about revision that are easy to make and quick to show improvements. The choice of which revision strategy is best for each student's first draft comes after experience with concrete, intentional strategies. Once students meet strategies at several levels, place them in small groups with others who will benefit from the same revision strategy. Quantify expectations for students using the Jot and Blend strategy; start with an average of two to three words per sentence.
