ABSTRACT

To assess an individual's participation in the seminar process, the teacher/facilitator must assess that individual's speaking, listening, and thinking skills. The teacher must collect at least three kinds of data from three separate artifacts: student pre- and post-seminar process documents, student post-seminar content writing, and teacher seminar map and notes. Students produce good measurement data during the very first step of the seminar cycle. Candid and collaborative assessment is a fundamental part of the learning process. Paideia Seminar assessment focuses on helping individual participants improve their speaking, listening, and thinking skills over time. An individual participant contributes to thoughtful dialogue not only by speaking but also by listening and thinking. In designing units or modules of study for the Common Core State Standards, this chapter develops a Speaking and Listening Rubric for students and their teachers to use in collaboration. Students need help in doing productive self-assessment and teachers are rightly concerned with this aspect of the seminar assessment process.
