Every school should assign a school safety coordinator. At most schools, this should be the principal or a trusted and experienced assistant principal. I was fortunate to move into a school with a veteran assistant principal who had solid experience as a school safety coordinator. Naturally, I asked him to compose ’the Friday Focus below. He began by telling teachers that asking if he feels safe at our school is a daily practice for him, much like our moment of silence or the Pledge of Allegiance. To answer this daily question, one must consider the many aspects that the word “safety” implies.
