ABSTRACT

In one of my very first graduate classes, the professor engaged us in a debate as to whether effective teaching is first and foremost an art or a science. Of course, the answer is both, and our most brilliant teachers have mastered the artistic as well as the scientific components of their noble profession. While both are essential to the success of any teacher, I still feel that most teachers, including our very best ones, lean ever-so-slightly toward one of the two. At our own school, for instance, I often brag about the educational training our staff has gained. Yet, if I had to choose, I would say that what sets our teachers apart and makes us unique is that we emphasize what constitutes the “art” of teaching just a tad more than the “science” of teaching.
