ABSTRACT

In an earlier Friday Focus (see Chapter 21), one of our ESOL teachers shared several strategies for working with our LEP population. She encouraged us to keep in mind what she termed the “Five Rs”: repeat, rephrase, reiterate, restate, and reword. As I mentioned in that chapter, these reminders are helpful in working with all learners, not just our ESOL students. In this week’s Friday Focus, Ezel Harrell, an eighth grade math teacher and our math department chairperson, once again focused on the letter “R” by sharing what she had learned at another school where she worked. The “Three Rs” shared below are not unlike the Five Rs shared earlier. Ezel called on teachers to use language that reinforces, reminds, and redirects students.
