Reggio Emilia Education
The Reggio Emilia approach is based on the early childhood education programs developed in the town of Reggio Emilia, Italy. For more than four decades, this small wealthy community has dedicated a generous portion of its budget to provide high quality childcare for children six years of age and younger. The approach is a blend of constructivist and progressive educational practices, with experiential, exploratory learning at the center. The stated goal of Reggio Emilia, which reflects an attempt to avoid Italy’s unfortunate 20th Century fascist history, is to help children “acquire skills of critical thinking and collaboration essential to rebuilding and ensuring a democratic society” (New 2000, p. 1).
