The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) describes its curriculum as “a rigorous pre-university course of studies that leads to examinations, for highly motivated secondary students” (www.ibo.org). The IBO curriculum certainly qualifies as a knowledge-centered, academically-oriented curriculum. Its purpose is to prepare students for the academic challenges of university life. Perhaps we can agree that it is a knowledge-centered curriculum that attempts to take into account the global societal demands made on students in an ever changing world. Certainly, its stated goal of developing international understanding among students of many cultures speaks to a certain society-centered emphasis, but it is clearly an academic, university preparatory curriculum.
