ABSTRACT

Next door, his colleague has just presented her students with an opportunity. They are to work in groups to propose a redesign for how the classroom might be arranged to better appeal to today’s students and the work that lies ahead for the remainder of the school year. Given a set of parameters and goals for the instructional setting, they are to design a scale drawing of the room they envision. Excitedly, the students begin working. Some start to measure the perimeter of the room. Suddenly, you see the bigger picture. At the point at which the students need to convert their figures to a smaller scale, they will need the skills related to ratio and proportion and the teacher will have a captive audience as she presents those skills.
